Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
/On Thursday, August 15 we celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a Holy Day of Obligation.
Like many of our Marian feasts, this is a very ancient one dating all the way back to the sixth century. Early on it was called the Assumptio (Taking Up).
By the Middle Ages, Mary’s Assumption into heaven was being formally celebrated, and when Pope Pius XII solemnly announced the Assumption of Mary to be a dogma of our faith in 1950, he was confirming what had been long held through our universal tradition. As such, many nationalities have wonderful feasts and processions around this celebration
